Sagres is at the southwest tip of Portugal. Until the 13thcentury it was believed to be the end of the world. This area is primarily a surfing destination, but there were relatively few surfers at the time of our visit. It is also the site of the Fortaleza de Sagres.Â
This fort is unique because it only has a wall on one side. The south side has a wall and the remaining sides are protected by sheer cliffs. It was also the site of Prince Henry the Navigator’s navigation school for Portuguese explorers.
Inside the fort there are generous walking paths that follow the perimeter and lead to some sites including a lighthouse and a few old buildings. We even saw several groups of old men fishing from the cliffs. Our quick Google search of the height indicated that the cliffs are over 60 meters/197 feet high! I can’t imagine how long it would take to reel in a catch.
