Sometimes the realities of travel don’t entirely meet your expectations. Our first week in Slovenia was one of those times.Â
I first visited Slovenia several years ago and  fell in love with the natural beauty. Slovenia is the perfect destination for those who love to be outdoors and I was counting down the days to our arrival.  My broken ankle was sufficiently recovered and we had just finished spending time with family in Switzerland. Our goal for Slovenia was to spend as much time outside as possible. Mountain biking, hiking, trail running….
We decided to spend our first 8 days in Pohorje, near Maribor. We selected this destination because it was the bike park with the best weather forecast. And we knew the bike trails were open because they hosted a downhill world cup race the previous weekend.Â
But, being from Seattle, we should have known that weather predictions are often wrong. The first 48 hours were warm and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities. Then, we experienced a combination of snow and unrelenting rain for the remainder of the stay. The gondolas stopped running due to the weather and our week of outdoor activities quickly transformed into a week of reading and drier activities.Â
Here is the comparison of our expected trip vs. the reality.Â
Expectation
Reality
The week wasn’t all bad, just not entirely what we expected.  In fact, I think Züri preferred the excitement of puddles to the boring dry trails. And, we were overwhelmed by the kindness of our host who, despite having absolutely no control over the weather, our host was profusely apologetic.  The amount of rain was atypical for this time of year and snow was almost unheard of.  He even offered to let us stay longer free of cost! (He also offered to pick up and wash our laundry because every time we attempted to go outside we ended up wet and muddy.)Â
Just a reminder that things don’t always go as planned.Â

Thanks 🙂 It was beautiful. We will have to go back when we can enjoy more time outside.
